Is your computer running slowly? |
If your computer is running slowly, it might be due to the number of
programs that run in the background when your computer starts. But how
can you prove that this is the reason your computer is so darn slow?
Read on to find out (By the way, this is for Windows XP only) ....
Firstly, select the Start button at
the bottom left of your machine, select Run and then type in msconfig
and then press enter.
It will open the System Configuration Utility, select the Startup tab.
It will list all the programs that are running at startup on your
computer. To stop them from starting up temporarily, just select the
"Disable All" button. This will temporarily stop the program from
starting at startup.
Warning: Just remember that your laptop might need one of these programs to use the mouse so be careful!!!
Then select OK and select "Restart your computer". Once your computer
reboots it will say it is in diagnostic mode. Just select OK.
Now check to see if your computer is any faster over the next hour or
so. If it is, then you know that you will have to stop some of the
programs from starting permanently. To do this, you will have to change
the registry settings via regedit. This can be very dangerous, so be
very careful if you decide to do this yourself.
If you go back into msconfig and the startup menu, you can actually see
where the startup programs are located, funnily enough under the
Location column.
